How does glitter glow paint work?

Glitter glow paint combines two effects: in the light, fine effect glitter shimmers; in the dark, the pigments glow. The glitter itself does not glow; it only reflects the light that falls on it. The base is the same acrylic paint with strontium aluminate glow pigments as the glow paint without glitter. Due to the glitter, the afterglow is slightly weaker than with the same shade without glitter.

Which glitter shade suits your design?

Yellow-Green and Blue-Green glow the longest, while Yellow is strongly coloured by day.

ShadeIn daylightIn the darkAfterglow duration
Yellow-Greenlight, whitish with a slight green tint and glitteryellow-greenup to 12 hours
Blue-Greenlight, whitish with a slight green tint and glitterblue-greenup to 12 hours
Yellowyellow with glittergreen to yellow-greenup to 4 hours

All values apply after a full charge, in complete darkness. In a thin coat the paint glows for a slightly shorter time. The glow is most intense in the first few minutes and turns into a faint glimmer after 1–2 hours.

What is glitter glow paint suitable for?

Glitter glow paint suits designs that should work by day and by night. Typical uses are star designs on walls and ceilings, pictures on canvas, painted stones and decorations. The glitter shows best where light falls on the design during the day. If orientation is the main goal, for example on light switches or stair edges, the glow paint without glitter glows slightly more strongly.

How to use glitter glow paint

Use glitter glow paint like any glow paint: thinly and in several coats.

  1. Stir the bottle thoroughly, including at the bottom – the glow pigments settle.
  2. Paint absorbent surfaces such as paper, wallpaper or wood directly. Prime smooth surfaces, and prime dark surfaces in a light colour, ideally white.
  3. Apply 2–3 thin coats with a brush, sponge or roller and let each one dry.
  4. If needed, thin slightly with water. Thinning it more reduces the glow.
  5. Clean your tools with water and close the bottle tightly.

Good to know

The paint adheres to paper, cardboard, wallpaper, canvas, wood, rubber, stone and glass, as well as to fabric and leather; wash textiles at no more than 30 °C. It is not weatherproof: outdoors, seal the dried coat with a solvent-based clear varnish. It charges with daylight or lamp light, as often as you like, fastest with UV light or sunlight. Each resealable bottle contains 100 g (approx. 90 ml). The ready-mixed paint is too thick for casting resin; there, use glitter glow powder to stir in. You will find more paints and varnishes under glow paints & varnishes and the safety data sheet under safety data sheets.

Frequently asked questions

Does the glitter glow in the dark?
No. The glitter is a daylight effect and shimmers when light falls on it. In the dark you see the afterglow of the pigments.
How long does glitter glow paint glow?
Yellow-Green and Blue-Green for up to 12 hours, Yellow for up to 4 hours – after a full charge, in complete darkness. The glitter makes the glow slightly weaker.
How many coats do I need?
For an even glow, two to three thin coats, ideally with a soft roller on larger areas. Every additional coat strengthens the effect.
Can I mix glitter glow paint into epoxy resin?
No, the ready-mixed paint is too thick for that. For resin, use glitter glow powder, which you stir in directly.
Can I use the paint outdoors?
Yes, with protection: cover the dried coat with a solvent-based clear varnish. Outdoors the glow is only visible where it is really dark.
