Purple-Blue: purple by day; in the dark the pigment glows blue.
These glow pigments have a particularly fine particle size of 5–15 µm (micrometres, thousandths of a millimetre). This lets them pass through fine screen-printing meshes and airbrush nozzles, and they can be used for watch hands, watercolour or 3D printing with DLP/SLA. The downside: the finer the particle size, the weaker the glow.
Properties
- Material: strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium, with a protective coating – which makes it water-resistant
- Particle size: 5–15 µm – for comparison: our standard pigments in natural shades are approx. 70–85 µm
- Colour: Purple-Blue – purple by day, glows blue. You will find all 11 colours under Fine pigments.
- Afterglow duration: shorter than with our standard pigments (there up to 12, 4 or 2 hours depending on colour, after a full charge in complete darkness), because the fine grain stores less light. The natural shades glow longest, then the lightly tinted ones (Yellow-Green, Green-Green, Orange-Orange), and the darkly tinted ones shortest (Blue-Blue, Purple-Blue, Red-Red, Pink-Pink, Terracotta)
- Heat: untinted natural shades up to 1,200 °C; do not process tinted shades above approx. 150 °C
- Classification: not classified as hazardous under CLP – see safety data sheet
How to use the fine pigments
Like all glow pigments, this powder is stirred into a carrier that is as clear as possible. As a starting point we recommend approx. 20% pigment relative to the carrier. Test the mixture on a small sample first.
- Screen printing: stir into transparent screen-printing ink. Rule of thumb: the pigment size should be no more than approx. one fifth of the mesh opening. We recommend meshes from 32T to 80T (80T: mesh opening 78 µm, printable up to approx. 16 µm).
- Airbrush: in transparent varnish, apply in several thin coats.
- Watch hands and fine markings: apply two coats; the glow is slightly weaker than with coarser pigment.
- Plastics and 3D printing: the pigment is hard and abrasive – nozzles and tools wear faster. The higher the proportion, the more the strength of the plastic may suffer.
- The lighter and more transparent the carrier, the stronger the glow.
What's included
100 g special glow pigment in the colour Purple-Blue in a resealable bag.
Good to know
Only choose the fine particle size if your application requires it: for casting resin, varnish or paint, coarser pigments glow much more strongly. Tinted shades glow more weakly than the natural shades; a true red is technically not possible. Afterglow is an aid for orientation and effects, not lighting: it is visible in real darkness, barely under a street lamp. Colours look different in photos depending on the camera and charge. The raw pigment is not a toy. When processing larger quantities, avoid dust and contact with skin and eyes.
