Purple is a special shade: in daylight the powder is whitish, in the dark it glows purple. To glow, it needs UV light – sunlight or a UV lamp. Normal room light barely excites it. Expect a noticeably weaker and shorter glow than with green or blue.

Properties

  • Material: strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium, with a protective coating – which makes it water-resistant
  • Afterglow duration: up to 2 hours after full charging in complete darkness
  • Colour: whitish by day, purple in the dark
  • Particle size: approx. 70 µm (1 µm = one thousandth of a millimetre)
  • Charging: best with UV light or sunlight; normal room light only excites it weakly
  • Heat-resistant: the pigment withstands up to 1,200 °C
  • Classification: not classified as hazardous under CLP – see safety data sheet

How to use the glow powder

The pigment does not dissolve; it is stirred into a carrier: epoxy and casting resin, clear varnish, acrylic paint, glue, paste, wax or silicone. As a starting point we recommend approx. 20% pigment, relative to the carrier; in opaque carriers such as white wall paint, rather 30–50%. Test the mixture on a small sample first.

  • The more transparent and lighter the carrier, the stronger the glow. Prime dark surfaces in a light colour first.
  • Purple is hard to make stand out on dark surfaces. Mixing in a little blue-green powder strengthens the glow – but it does not create a new shade.
  • In thin, runny resin the pigment sinks: let the resin thicken briefly, then stir it in.
  • Outdoors, use weatherproof clear varnishes or epoxy; indoors, solvent-free carriers such as clear varnish or paste are suitable.

What's included

40 g glow powder purple in a resealable poly bag.

Good to know

Purple is an effect shade for dark rooms, stage and black light – not a light source. For a long, strong afterglow, green, blue-green or blue are better suited. The raw pigment is not a toy. When working with larger quantities, avoid dust and contact with skin and eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my purple barely glow?
Purple can be excited almost only with UV light. Room light or incandescent light barely charges it. Charge it with sunlight or a UV lamp from 365 nm and look at it in complete darkness.
How long does purple glow?
Up to 2 hours after full charging in complete darkness. It glows most brightly in the first few minutes. For technical reasons, purple glows weaker and for a shorter time than green or blue.
What is the difference from glow powder Purple-Purple?
This powder is whitish by day and is barely noticeable in light carriers. Purple-Purple is strongly tinted purple even by day. Both glow purple in the dark.
How much glow powder do I need?
As a starting point, approx. 20% relative to the carrier – so about 20 g for 100 ml of varnish. In opaque carriers such as white wall paint, 30–50%. More pigment glows brighter, but above about 30% in clear carriers it adds little. 40 g is therefore enough for around 200 ml of clear carrier.
Does the powder also glow under black light?
Yes. The pigments have an afterglow (phosphorescent) and also fluoresce under UV or black light. The lighter the daylight colour, the more intense the fluorescence.
Are the pigments radioactive?
No – like all modern glow pigments. The glow comes solely from stored light.
