Red by day, a reddish afterglow in the dark: this strongly tinted pigment based on strontium aluminate adds a splash of colour above all in daylight. Important for your expectations: a true, intense red in the dark is technically not possible with glow pigments. The glow is considerably weaker and shorter than with green or blue.

Properties

  • Material: strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium, with a protective coating – which makes it water-resistant
  • Afterglow duration: up to 2 hours after a full charge in complete darkness; at its strongest in the first few minutes
  • Colour: red in daylight, reddish in the dark and considerably weaker than green
  • Particle size: approx. 20–30 µm (1 µm = one thousandth of a millimetre)
  • Charging: as a dark shade it needs a lot of light, ideally sunlight or a UV lamp
  • Temperature: tinted pigment – do not use above approx. 150 °C
  • Classification: not classified as hazardous under CLP – see safety data sheet

How to use the glow powder

The pigment does not dissolve but is stirred into a carrier: epoxy and casting resin, clear varnish, acrylic paint, adhesive, wallpaper paste, wax or silicone. As a starting point we recommend approx. 20% pigment, relative to the carrier; in opaque carriers such as white wall paint rather 30–50%. Test the mix on a small sample first.

  • The more transparent and lighter the carrier, the stronger the glow. Prime dark surfaces in a light colour first.
  • In thin, runny resin the pigment sinks: let the resin thicken slightly, then stir it in.
  • For outdoor use, choose weather-resistant clear varnishes or epoxy; indoors, solvent-free carriers such as clear varnish or wallpaper paste are suitable.

What's included

40 g glow powder Red in a poly bag.

Good to know

Red is a colour and effect shade, not lighting. If you are mainly looking for an intense, long afterglow, green or blue-green is the better choice. The raw pigment is not a toy. When working with larger quantities, avoid dust and contact with skin and eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the powder really glow red in the dark?
Not as a true, intense red – that is technically not possible with glow pigments. In daylight the powder is clearly red; in the dark it glows more weakly and reddish.
How should I charge Red?
With sunlight or a UV lamp from 365 nm. As a dark shade, red needs more light than green or blue. A light surface beneath the pigment layer enhances the effect.
Can I use Red with heat?
Only to a limited extent. Tinted pigments should not be used above approx. 150 °C, because the daylight colour can decompose.
Can I mix different glow powders with each other?
Yes, but no new shade is created as with liquid paint. Because of the particle size, the grains remain individually visible, often as a colourful mixed effect. If you mix a strongly glowing pigment into a weak shade, the mix glows for longer; the stronger grains then stand out.
How much glow powder do I need?
As a starting point, approx. 20% relative to the carrier – about 20 g per 100 ml of varnish. In opaque carriers such as white wall paint 30–50%. More pigment glows brighter, but above about 30% in clear carriers it adds little. 40 g is therefore enough for around 200 ml of clear carrier.
