This orange glow powder is based on calcium sulfide (CaS), not strontium aluminate. It is intended for special applications where strontium aluminate is not an option and orange is needed. For all other projects we recommend our orange glow powder based on strontium aluminate: it is not classified as hazardous and is water-resistant.

By day the powder is orange, and in the dark it glows orange.

Properties

  • Material: calcium sulfide (CaS)
  • Afterglow duration: approx. 1 hour after full charging in complete darkness; at its strongest in the first few minutes
  • Particle size: approx. 70 µm (1 µm = one thousandth of a millimetre)
  • Charging: with daylight or artificial light, fastest with UV light or sunlight
  • Heat-resistant: up to 300 °C
  • CLP labelling: Warning (GHS07, GHS09). Causes skin irritation and serious eye irritation, may cause respiratory irritation, very toxic to aquatic life (H315, H319, H335, H400)

How to use the glow powder

The powder must not be mixed with water. Stir it into a colourless carrier such as epoxy resin, clear varnish, gel or wax. As a starting point we recommend approx. 20% pigment relative to the carrier. Test the mixture on a small sample first.

  • Only work with it in the open air and do not breathe in the dust.
  • Wear safety goggles and protective gloves.
  • Do not allow it to enter the environment, bodies of water or drains.
  • The lighter the background, the stronger the glow.

What's included

40 g glow powder orange (calcium sulfide) in a poly bag. The hazard statements are printed on the packaging.

Good to know

In case of contact with the eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes, remove contact lenses if present and easy to do, and continue rinsing. You can download the safety data sheet from this page. Afterglow is a visual effect, not a light source: it only becomes visible in real darkness.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need the calcium sulfide orange?
Only for special applications where strontium aluminate cannot be used. For resin, varnish, paint and decoration we recommend the orange glow powder based on strontium aluminate.
Why must the powder not come into contact with water?
Unlike our strontium aluminate pigments, calcium sulfide is not made water-resistant by a protective coating. The manufacturer explicitly states: do not mix with water. Use colourless carriers such as epoxy resin, clear varnish, gel or wax.
What protective measures do I need?
The powder is labelled as a hazardous substance: it irritates the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and is very toxic to aquatic life. Work with it in the open air, wear safety goggles and gloves, and do not let it enter the environment.
How long does the powder glow?
Approx. 1 hour after full charging in complete darkness. It is at its strongest in the first few minutes, then gradually fades.
